David Warner, the celebrated Australian cricketer, has surprised the cricketing community by announcing his retirement from one-day international ODI cricket, ahead of his final Test match. #Australia
The unexpected announcement came on Monday, with Warner also set to bid adieu to the Test cricket arena after the third match against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground SCG.
While Warner's decision to retire from Test cricket was somewhat anticipated, his sudden exit from ODI was a bolt from the blue. Warner, 37, expressed that he's at peace with his decision to call it a day on his ODI career, especially after Australia's stellar performance at the World Cup in India the previous year.
At a press conference, Warner, flanked by his family, stated that his retirement would open the door for him to participate more in overseas franchise cricket.
He, however, left possibilities open for continuing in the T20 format for Australia and didn't dismiss the idea of a comeback, should Australia require an opening batsman for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
Warner had hinted at his decision to retire from ODI cricket in November when he revealed that he wouldn't accept a new contract from Cricket Australia. He expressed his intentions to spend more time with his family while also looking forward to playing the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean.
